Get Time Machine In Leopard Work

After trying to follow different instructions without success I found a workaround which works fine for me. (External disk connected via USB to my Airport Base station).
There is a hidden system preference that needs to be change. This can be done by typing the following command in the Terminal (in ONE(!) line).

defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1

After doing this the disk appeared in my network connections and was available to Time Machine without any further modification.

The initial kicked-off backup took about 2 days but now I have a constant wireless backup solution which works quite fast. This gives me additional security for small changes I make during a week - main backup is still done via firewire or usb disks connected solely and directly to my mac.

    Hey Jeannot,

I tried to do this and can’t seem to get it to work. What OSX did you have on the machine you did this with? I have an Airport Extreme that I have a 1tb HD hooked up to via USB. I have it partitioned into 4 sets and named differently for each machine I want to backup to. I can see the airdrives in the AE utility, but when I launch Time Machine the computer that I want to back up to it can’t see the drives cuz of the way Apple has set this all up. That is why your suggestion of changing the prefs sounded soo good, but either I don’t know Terminal well enough or something… I just get Terminal invalid comand prompts… HELP.
    Cheers,

    Hey Cory,

just realized that my layout split the coding in two lines. Please ensure that you are using the code within the following quotes “defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1″ without the quotes.

Hope this helps. If not, please just drop me another post. I was using this tip starting with Leopard (as only Leopard has the functionality of TimeMachine) from version 10.5.1 until 10.5.4.

    cheers
    Jeannot
