Sharepoint - Edit in datasheet view doesn’t work

Obviously sometimes the datasheet view is not working for clients using Microsoft Sharepoint Server. The reasons are multiple, depending on the Office product and release. Symptoms differ from does just not work to the following error message:

“The list cannot be displayed in Datasheet view for one or more of the following reasons: A datasheet component compatible with Windows SharePoint Services is not installed, your browser does not support ActiveX controls, or support for ActiveX controls is disabled. ”

Microsoft states http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909506/en-us that this behavior is by design.

It is only available in Office Professional, not standard, not SBE.

If found some workarounds on the net:

The following page gives an overview on the functions per MS Office package.

It seems furthermore that the function to show a datasheet in Excel per default is not working anymore with Office 2007 installed. It seems to be the design of Microsoft to open any form in Access view only, once Office 2007 installed. It would be great if anyone can confirm or tell me about a known workaround for this.

I was able to fix my issue of Access Web Datasheet pulling back no data…

Insert Office 2003 installation disc, and select a custom installation, removing everything except Excel. Also specify that you want to do an Advanced Installation before clicking Next.

In the advanced screen, set Excel to Do Not Install, and turn off everything else, EXCEPT Office Web Components and Office Sharepoint Services Support. At this point you will be running Edit in Datasheet with the 2003 control, but can’t edit files directly from MOSS.

Then run a Repair on the Office 2007 installation, and reboot (clear browser cache, as well). Now you’re back to Access Web Datasheet, and able to edit files online again.

    Hi,

thank you very much for your hint, which actually works in case you face issues with the Access Web Datasheet not working. Basically my issue is slightly different. If want by default that the Excel sheet is used and not the Access Datasheet view. Many reason is that my company does not want to roll out per default Access.

Do you have any experience with this kind of issues? My understanding is that Microsoft wants to define Access Datasheet as being the default view with MOSS. This is the confusing part for me. Any help and advice (and correction in case my perception is wrong) is highly appreciated.

    Many thanks and regards
    Jeannot
