iUUInstaller OSX

Please find enclosed the latest version of iUUInstallerOSX (IUUInstallerOSX.dmg - 3.42 MB).

The idea of this program was born as I realized that the Ubuntu Universal USB Installer does exist for Windows only. Knowing that it isn’t easy to boot on a Mac an Operating System different to OS X, I’m still interested to be able to use the similar tools for creating USB bootable non Windows Systems on a Mac.

The above program converts all USB ready images – let it be dmg, img, or iso files into the appropriate format for “burning” them on a USB stick. After the conversion all necessary data are copied to the selected USB stick. Below you can find some examples of converted files and bootable USB sticks I was able to launch on VMware Fusion (as descibed in the article: ‘Booting Operating System from USB Drive in VMware Fusion 3.x‘)

Fedora 13 Live System:

Open Suse Live System:

Google Chromium:

The best resource for the latest Chromium releases I’m aware of can be found at hexxeh.net, more particularly at http://chromeos.hexxeh.net/ .

Most of the time user and password for Chromium OS compilations are: facepunch

Installation of iUUInstaller OS X is very easy. Please first download the file from here. Unzip the file and open the unpacked image file. Please move the “Tux” picture into your applications folder, or double-click the Tux if you want to test first.

After launching the application all menu items should be self-explanatory. Please select a source file and an accurate destination (USB stick) and kiff off the conversion. Depending on the speed of your hardware the whole process will take from 5 minutes to 45 minutes.

Please be aware that you need eventually to “reset” – means “format” your USB Stick. This is an in-built functionality:

This application is still beta. The main purpose of this application was to help those persons, who aren’t comfortable with too many terminal strokes. Further development is possible but is depending simple much from the feedback we’ll get. Overall we believe that iUUInstaller can become THE alternative to unetbootin on Windows and Linux Platforms.

The current version is still beta, but we invite you all to help getting rid of potentially still existing hiccups.

hey, just downloaded iUUInstaller. nice software, better than type all that stuff on terminal to create an usb boot. only thing that got me confused was the progress bar, that is not actually showing some progress.

it took me 26min to create the usb. can i boot it in another computer or this is just to run on vm?

Thank you for your kind words, I basically tested it on virual machines only. But it pretty much depends on your BIOS on the destination machine and the image you have copied on the USB if it will boot or not.

In a nutshell, if it is a bootable image it will boot under the condition that your PC’s BIOS lets you boot from USB stick.

The progress bar is indeed an issue, as the performace depends pretty much on the size of your image to be copied and the write speed of your USB device.

It will always be longer than just copying the files by drag and drop, as it makes some work in the background to ensure that the USB will be bootable.
