Hari Raya Haji, 哈芝节 in Singapore

17th November was Hari Raya Haji, 哈芝节 in Singapore and the end of the Hajj pilgrimage lead to a public holiday. Coincidentally the Czech celebrated the the aniniverary of the Velvet revolution in 1989. So less e-Mail traffic than usual and I achieved to organize my work as such that I had time for 5 hours rush through Singapore.

I walked some miles through Singapore with my whole equipement and see below my gallery of shots. The Skypark at Marina Bay Sands for really fantastic and at an entry fee of 20 S$ quite competitive to similar destinations in Europe (not saying that it is a bargain if you want to visit with your family).

Singapore is surely a fascinating country. The diversity is quite similar to Luxembourg but the diversity of religions living obviously in perfect harmony next to each other can only be found again in Malaysia. To this respect Singapore is quite close to Kuala Lumpur.

People are very friendly, even though I had the feeling that the Malaysian are even an idea more friendly.

Chinatown was definitely worth a visit (especially at night, when I returned to have dinner there), but I have to say that I was more impressed by the street kitchens in Kuala Lumpur. It seems to me that Singapore is far more touristic (no surprise as it is the hub and stop for travelers from Europe with destination Australia or New Zealand) then KL. I had the feeling that I got a more original and authentical “cuisine” in KL.

The major discovery at night was me bumping into a “Wuerstelstand”, especially as Erich (now I know his name) looked surprised when I took a photo of his stand. Some research in the internet revealed that he is the “Erich” and the “Austrian” from Singapore and as I studied some time in Austria and have friends there, I would probably have had a chat with him and bought one of his last sausages. Erich is running his own blogspot and facebook fanpage, so if you’re Austrian and/or like Austrian sausages, you should probably pay more attention then me when visiting. Chinatown in Singapore. Luxembourg causing significant traffic on the Internet

Cliff Kuang published last week a very interesting article (“Infographic of the Day: Comparing the 100 Largest Sites on the Internet“), showing a lot of graphics how the internet is currently used and pointed me to the original source from BBC: “SuperPower: Visualising the internet”

Most sites reveal the one and the other surprise but I have been particularly surprised to see my home country Luxembourg showing up on the “by Country” break down.

This traffic (>39.000.000 unique users) is not caused by a .lu domain, but solely to Skype, as the company is based in Luxembourg. Funny enough big traffic in Germany is caused by the RTL network. Even though RTL has its origin in Luxembourg, the RTL network is meanwhile managed from Cologne, Germany.
